Campingaz in Small Campervans
There was a post on Club Together about the use of Campingaz in small campervans. Having space for a single 907 bottle is not unusual although in that instance I think they only had space for a 904. I've currently got a 907, I could squeeze a 901 in as an
emergency spare and there's a slim possibility of reengineering to fit a 904 as a spare but that would mean moving some other stuff.
I've just done some calculations based on the refill prices and expected usage. I've worked on a 907 bottle lasting 35 days (two burner stove only) and my planned holidays for the year are about 27 days although that may go up.
On that basis I've decided it's simply not worth worrying about a spare! As best, using a 904 as a spare plus the 907, I'd save around £3.50 a year over simply replacing the 907 annually. As a 904 will cost me over £38 for the empty cylinder, and there'd
be quite a bit of reworking needed, it'll take well over 10 years to pay back the investment.
Obviously the calculation would be different for someone who's away a lot more than I am, and if I was designing from scratch I'd certainly want to get two bottles in.
