Was the 50 mph speed limit sign on caravans ever mandatory to display and if so when and why was it discontinued?

I believe it was and was dropped when the limit was increased to 60mph (on dual / mway).

The 50 sign was displayed if:

The caravan weighed less than the car, both car and caravan displayed their respective weights and I guess if the owner wanted to travel at 50 rather than 40

The limit was raised from 50 to 60 in the summer of 86 .... from memory!  I would have been 16 so not a driver at the time but I do remember we went on holiday as a family in July travelling at a max of 50 and returned in August at a max of 60!

Is there any point in speed limits (numbers in black surrounded by a red circle) if no one takes any notice of them and there is nobody to police them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?

We started towing over 30 years ago and we never had a 50 sign but never had a car heavier than the car.
