I have got my leasure battery at home on charge at the moment. Just had a carpet fitted in the caravan and would like to vacuum the van on EHU. Is this possible without connecting the battery, or is the battery an integral part of the circuit? Thanks in
advance.

John.

The battery is not needed if using a domestic vac on EHU, just plug in and do your chores. The battery however is necessary for the 12 volt system to work correctly. Before plugging in to the EHU post make sure the battery leads are NOT touching each other as the charger switch might be in the ON position. If they do touch, at the very least you will blow a fuse and could damage the charger.

Most 12V  systems can work from the charger without a battery being in postition, if a 230V supply is connected- just, as Nuggy say, ensure the battery terminals don't touch...!

I'm not sure it's a good idea to use the system without the battery in place, what happens if one of the battery leads goes to earth. At the very least you would need to really tape up the leads before you used the mains power or am I being over cautious?

Certainly, when I checled some 10 year ago, manufacturers were saying not to use the 12 volt without a battery.

It is certainly true that most caravan manufacturers state that the battery should always be in circuit, however, this is really to do with the use of the dc side of the system.  I think that if you do as stated above (check the terminals, switch the charger
off and just use the ac socket outlets) you will be OK.

The battery acts to smooth the dc system and also can provide a lot more current than the 12volt charger.

Modern chargers don't require a battery in circuit, just make sure the battery leads don't touch, or remove the fuse often found near the battery.

Some systems need the battery in place, some don't so it's difficult to give a definitive answer, JD.

To elaborate on my previous post. The proviso for some vans needing the battery in place is only when running 12v systems while connected to EHU.

Providing the battery charger is turned off, there is no problem with using 240v without a battery.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been sailing for the last 24 hours. The replies are varied but I thank all that have taken the trouble to do so. For what it is worth, I will probably tape up the battery connecters. Thanks all.

No need to tape anything up if you switch the charger off on your electric / fuse/ rcd panel. We've never had a van without a charger on/ off switch.

We have no EHU but can use a powerful 240v vacuum through an inverter. All power supplied by the sun!
