Grey Rear Panels on SUV models

Does anyone know the answer as to why manufacturers fit grey panels to the rear of SUVs? 

My own take on the appearance is that the vehicle appears unfinished what with a huge amount spent on design and finish apart from the ugly piece of cheap plastic attached to the rear.
