plugged the van in at home last night prior to my caravan service engineer coming today to replace motor mover rollers, woke up this morning and there was a horrendous smell everywhere outside and in the van. I checked the battery and it was red hot so immediately
disconnected from mains.

Engineer checked the charging unit and it was working within parameters,so clearly a faulty battery, it was only a year old so took it back to the dealers who said it was faulty but stated it might be because of the charging unit damaging it, I explained
that had been checked this morning so he (reluctantly I felt )replaced the battery, it had a two year warranty.

the whole incident is slightly disconcerting though because I guess the battery in that state is highly dangerous .
