Fire and tents, do some folk need a safety lesson?

I may be digging a hole for myself here as we always take the charcoal BBQ with us, but I've noticed a growing trend for things like garden oil lamps, firepits and the like on neighbours pitches. I grew up with the 'thou shalt not have a fire within a large
distance of any tent'-type rule and have always abided by it, but this doesn't seem to be followed now. Is this a good or bad thing do you think?
