Parking up after leaving a site

Hi to all experienced caravanners from a novice. When touring caravanners must leave a site on completion of their trip, BUT still want to remain in the vicinity to continue sightseeing what do they do with their their van? Can you park them and leave them
somewhere? Or do you all just go home?
