My Father in Law is finally calling it a day
After more 50 years as a member of the club my 85 year old father in law has finally decided its time to finish caravaning. If anyone could guide us with what he can realistically expect to get for his caravan and where best to advertise it we would appreciate
it.
It's a 2004 Rally Magnum Classic 432. Just had a Powertouch remote mover fitted and has a full awning.
Many thanks

Caravaning until he was 85! ... Respect! Bless him, I bet he will really miss it. Good luck on selling the van, hope he gets a good price for it

If I can keep going untill 85 I will be happy, quite an achievement. Probably the best bet is the classified adverts on the clubs web site or other caravan ones. Do be aware of though of the fraudsters who might try to take it and be sure to get cash. The
adverts from second hand caravan buyers seem to be populated by those offering well below the value but will be less hassle0 -
Congratulations to your FIL for such a good "innings". As a matter of interest, has your FIL had any recognition from the club for his loyalty?

Best wishes to your Dad. We bought our first caravan from an advert in a supermarket - from an elderly couple who took their grandchildren on holiday, but were giving up caravanning. We got everything we needed - caravan, awning, step, hook-up, water carrier,
waste container, pans, cutlery, crockery, and lots of other stuff which we still use 24 years later! However, we threw out the four toothbrushes and facecloths in the washroom.Having decided that we loved caravanning we sold the old caravan a year later for the same amount as we paid for it (keeping fitted extra electrics and re-upholstering it at a cost of £33.00, keeping all the equipment for ourselves) and bought a new caravan
of a similar layout.I would suggest a supermarket ad as a first step, and if it doesn't sell to first-timers, then use the Caravan Club free adverts, or one of the other caravanning forums, which will reach a large number of caravanners.

I can't help with the price but I sold one on Preloved. I got the price to ask from a dealer and added £500 for wriggle room but the buyer didn't haggle! As has been said beware the scammers. Congratulations FIL it would be nice to think I have another
14 years to go but doubt it somehow unless I go seasonal pitch somewhere nice.0 -
Look at adverts for similar age and model caravans in such places as caravan finder, ebay, caravan autotrader, preloved and Gumtree. Remember dealer prices are not what you will get selling privately albeit you do have all the gear which clearly has a value.
Good luck, dont be frightened of ebay, i sold mine thtough that site this year, used a classified advert Format at s fixed price. Also worth trying local shops as already suggested. As with any private sale you need your wits about you, con men are con men
wherever you advertise and not just restricted to ebay.0 -
All the best to your father in law! Another alternative is to approach a good dealership and ask if they will sell it for you (brokerage.) You agree on a price and all the hassle of selling is removed, you'll get your payment when the van sells. You could
sell the smaller caravan items, like aqua rolls, separately on ebay or local adverts for cash. Good luck, hope you have a good sale.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, tips and guidance, much appreciated.

Well done! My Grandfather was the same. He was going until he was 88, knocked it on the head after grandmother passed on. Funny though, for some reason he never slept inside, but outside in the awning. Went in all winds and weathers.
Have a look around at what your FIL caravan model is selling for on usual sale sites and that will give you a better idea of the market than peoples opinions as they natuarally will vary greatly.
