Shock absorbers

What are the benefits ?

Are they value for money / cost effective ?

We had them on our last van ( already on when we bought it) but the new van hasnt got them, the old van did seem to feel more stable but I dont know if that was the shocks or just a better balanced van or match for the car

So opinions please
