Gardening Woes!

Now I dont profess to be any good in the garden - indeed mine has often been classed as a nature reserve - not really but you get my drift...

Anyway I have an area beside my house roughly 6ft x 4ft x 1ft deep lined with polythene that is a raised garden box filled with new compost with wooden surround. There is always wind gusting and its overlooked by the house and fencing shadow and ivy growing
on the fence. I would love to grow something worthwhile in it to make use of it but sadly nothing seems to grow there any ideas please?
