Front Tow Bars

I have a very steep narrow drive, so far I have used the fitted mover to reverse the van up the drive into its storage position.  Whilst the mover does achieve this, it slows significantly and over time it will probably cause premature failure of the mover.
 I have a 3 series Disco and I'm considering fitting a front tow bar.  Has anyone used front tow balls, is manoeuvring as easy as advertised?  As the drive is also narrow I would have to opt for the centrally positioned tow ball. Grateful for any advice/experience
