Hi All,

Im Chris from Alcester, Warwickshire, currently own a Ford Herald motorhome. Have been a club member just over a year now and enjoying the leisure life.

Booking my B+E training within the next 2 weeks and I will then have access to a Lunar Lexon 530.

I was wondering though, I have access to the owners of the caravan's car (2014 Land Rover Freelander) however I was wondering if my car is capable enough,

I have a 2010 (60 facelift) Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (140) Auto, is this any good? I believe it is better to have a bit more power so have got a quote for an ECU remap which bumps it upto 185bhp, is this worth doing?

Thanks in advanced guys.

Chris :D

Hi whilst the Mondeo diesel is a capable towcar, you may find the auto box hunting the gears constantly changing up and down, normally with an auto a 2.5 would be my minimum to stop this, the remap to 185bhp may be the answer, I am sure some Mondeo owners
will be on soon to give you thier  first hand knowledge,

Hi kaenergas, Thanks for that, yes I may get the ECU remapped and at the same time I do use my manual option more so this may help too.

    Thanks Again :)

As a new tower, the weight ratio may be more of an issue. The MTPLM of the Lunar shouldn't be more than 85% of the kerb weight of the car.

Hi Chris.  As this post is mainly to do with Towcar and towing, I will move it to that section, where it is more likely to be seen by those who are able to help.

    Regards

I do not know what year the Lexon is but I would be pretty sure it is too heavy for the Mondeo if you are new to towing. The caravan should be no more than 85%of the kerb weight of the tow car to comply with the clubs advice although personally I would not
worry if you keep below 90%, but 85 is the advice.

I would also be wary of upgrading the cars performance unless you have expert confirmation that it is able to take the extra power. You also need to inform your insurer who might increase the premium. Do not do it and you could find you have no cover.
