Bowering caravans from family members is great but make sure they give you a full run down of how to sent it up and what you need to do to hook up the Electrical lead and turn the gas on and off in the front locker and what to look for if the RCD trips

Last weekend a man around my age came over and asked if i could look over his borrowed van to make sure it was all OK as he had never towed or set up on a pitch before this was the first time him and his wife and 2 kids had been in a caravan themselves. It was a brand new van his father had bought for the family to share.

He had the basics all OK,The van was level chemicals in the toilet and cassette but what worried me was the electrical lead all coiled up on a reel i explained the dangers of this and he unraveled the whole reel walking it up and down the length of the pitch, next was the gas bottle,as soon as it was turned on the locker area was filling with strong smell of gas !!!!!! i removed the connection everything seemed to be OK but we reconnected it was still the same problem.I advised him taking the bottle to be checked as the connection may be damaged and not to use the gas.

Im very happy he was not scared to come and ask for help and advise because that evening anything could of happened with the gas or electrically. Most younger families I've spoke to on sites buy the vans second hand privately incase they don't like it they can sell on and not loose out on to much money, but doing this they haven't been shown how everything works like you get from a dealer.

Maybe once a van gets to a age it should get a MOT every year,I'm sure the old vans don't get serviced like the newer vans do.Maybe there should be a Caravan setting up school for first time caravaners. Something the Wardens could run at sites tell them its your first time the come with you make sure you sent it up right. All for a small fee.
