Advice needed - electric cables

Good Evening,

Can anyone tell us whether you have problems with your electric cables being loose/too long while you are towing? On a recent trip back home we noticed our lights had gone out in the van. We stopped to see what the problem was but could not locate on roadside.
Luckily we where not far from home! On inspection we found one of the electric cables had been hanging too low and had been scraping on the ground causing the cable to cut the electics!! We have since replaced this and all good again but wondered if we should
tie up/secure the cables or are they ment to hang loose for the movement of van and car!! Dont want this to happen again. Anyone else had this problem and if so how did you solve it!
