After much debate, I have bought a Mercedes E350 estate which should tow my 1500kg van with little problem.

Some members may be aware that many cars are now being supplied with a cooling system which has been designed with a smaller margin of cooling capacity which may or may not be sufficient for towing.

When asking a franchised dealer for a tow bar to be fitted, many are quoting up to £2000 on used cars. Further enquiring as to why the cost is so horrendous, the response is that it needs additional cooling with larger fans etc.

Does anyone own and tow with this car? if so, do you need/have you fitted additional cooling? and finally, what weight do you tow. Thanks in advance for any responses.

ps this seems to affect german car manufacturers more. Perhaps they are being cautious, or perhaps they see an opportunity. In the case of the VW Touareg, I note that the towing limit is stated as 3.5 tonnes - although for the UK market extra cooling needs
to be fitted, but not so in Germany where the car is fitted with a larger fan as standard.
