Volvo XC90

I have just bought a Volvo XC90 2010 geartronic we will

be towing a Bailey Pegasus Genoa 2 berth and can anyone give advice on what to do and what not to do with the automatic gears/manual on long descents and climbs.  I have read some disturbing stories, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
