Fiat/Peugeot X250 - reliability

My wife and I have owned a 20' compact coachbuilt for 18 months but are looking to trade up a larger van with fixed bed. I have read about the horrendous clutch judder/gearbox problems on early (2007/8/9) Fiat Ducato/Peugeot Boxer vehicles. Given that these
make up probably 70% or more of the available secondhand market can anyone advise me on this. Were the early ones satisfactorily repaired/modified? From what manufacture date is it safe to assume a vehicle will be free of these problems. Is it the case that
all the early ones should not be touched with a bargepole? Any advise would be appreciated.
