E61 520D vs 530D Tow Car Performance

Hi I'm looking at replacing our car and wondering about towing performance of 520D & 530D BMWs. Previously we've towed our 1300kg Swift with a 1996 BMW 520i petrol saloon. The the car was superb and really steady but the power was a bit lacking especially
on motorway inclines into a headwind when trying to maintain a reasonable speed.

We'd been really pleased with the BMW overall so were looking to replace with either an E60/E61 520D or 530D. I've never owned (or towed with) a deisel before and was wondering others expericences of towing with either of these cars. I'd be looking at the
163bhp 520D or the 218/232 bhp 530D both in manual versions. I'm pretty sure the 520D would meet our requirements day to day but have my doubts about what it would be like as a tow car so am wondering if I should take the hit on running costs and look out
for a 530D.

I'd be interested in hearing any experiences of towing with either of these cars
