Hi all, we are looking to go to Devon or Cornwall this summer during August for a fortnight.  We have previously stayed at Hillhead and Looe and really enjoyed both, but this year we are looking around the Falmouth area or somewhere near St Ives.  We are
open to suggestions really!  Our kids will be 4 and 6 years.

Our essential must haves are -

Super Pitch (serviced)

Playpark

Near to beach

Near to a town/village

Cycling trails nearby - preferably from the site

Desirable would be -

Swimming pool

Some sort of entertainment

Kids club

Takeaway onsite

We dont ask for much do we?! Any recommendations for non CC or CC sites would be appreciated!

CC have several sites in Cornwall, but given your requirements it would probably be a commercial site that would suit your needs.  We have been to Hendra which is just outside Newquay, which has everything you ask for.  It is a large site, both tourer and
static, but it is well run, but we only go there outside peak times.   Or I can recommend Trewan Hall, St Columb Major.  Your kids will love it.  Take a look at their website,
http://www.trewan-hall.co.uk/.   Wherever you choose, have a lovely time, Cornwall is great for family holidays.

Wouldn’t it be good if Centre Parcs offered camping pitches? I know they don’t have any in Cornwall, but they have all the other requirements for keeping an active family occupied.

Trewan Hall  £39.00 / night for 2 Adults, 2 Children c/w with Free WIFi ( or included for those pernickety members)

HillHead  - £48.00 per night for the same numbers, AFAIK WIFI extra

It would be at a price that would make even the most go anywhere any price, think before going, as their lead in price ,does not include most of their activities at centre parks

Perran Sands (Haven) on the outskirts of Perranporth, on the north coast of Cornwall would suit most of your requirements. We used to find plenty to do there when our son was young.

If I was you chris, with your requirements, I would take a look on UKcampsites to start with, and use their filters to see what you can find. Usually reviews for each place as well, and then you could ask on here if anyone knows if a site you fancy is any
good. We found some lovely places via UKcampsites last year, and will use it again this year.

We stayed at Ayr Holiday Park in St Ives last year - fantastic location with a lot of the facilities you're looking for.  However, it is massively expensive - we were £42 a night for a simple grass pitch that sat at such a slope that we nearly had to be towed off it!  But other pitches were much flatter, so might be worth considering If you're happy to pay that kind of money.

Write your comments here... Hope you find what you are looking for.....but you must think your £48 CC fee is a waste of money with your criteria. Try Best Of British Caravan Sites, they may be nearer what you are looking for.

Have you thought about one of the sites just outside Padstow - they'll be very busy in summer but you'd have most of what you want including the Camel Trail for cycling down in the town itself and any number of beaches nearby.

Happy. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

Thanks all, we don't generally get super pitches, in fact we have only ever used one in three years of caravanning! But this year we thought we would treat ourselves for the summer hol!

we come from the Peak District and are keen runners/mountain bikers so it's important we can use our bikes as at hill head and looe we were limited by their location for the children to cycle with us straight from the site.

we stay on CC sites 95% of the time so our membership definitely isn't a waste! Our favourite sites are Clumber, Coniston and Chatsworth.

Hi, It is of course a matter of personal taste when looking at sites but one issue will be the cycle trails,it seems that you want off road, which will limit you. If you are prepared to travel to cycle then you will have a far wider choice.

We usually have a couple of weeks at Polmanter near St Ives, but this year we are having a break, and that has good quality facilities and whilst not near the beach it is walkable on a very quiet country lane and we do this then get  bus/taxi back.

One site that I think has most of your desirables is Pentewan Sands near Mevagissey. It is in the beach, near villages and towns and has a cycle trail which I think you can access almost directly from the site. We have spent time on the beach there but not
camped there and hope to in September on a Wiltshire Centre rally.

Another that springs to mind in regard to beach access us Porth Beach near Newquay.

As others have said wherever you go it will cost and that, coupled with four years rubbush weather, is why we and our daughters family are probably going abroad this year. Our daughter and family, two adults and three children aged from 3 to 6, in a tent with
electric would have been just under £850. We live in Cornwall and if the weather is good there is nowhere better but, for our daughter who lives 'up country' it's getting too expensive a gamble when it's your only holiday.

Wherever you stay hope that you have a great time and weather to match!

The Pentewen one looks great for the children, thanks! I'm looking at all the suggestions and they are all great, I'm glad I asked now!

We were exactly the same, even if the holiday was free, wasting your annual holiday in bad weather is a disaster. Children go up so quickly, you really want memories of holidays enjoyed in great weather not stuck in a tent or caravan

Instead of going to one seaside resort, might I suggest that you base yourself inland at a place central to many coastal areas of interest.

WE stayed for a couple of weeks in a lovely CL within walking distance of Bodmin, next to the river Camel adjacent to the camel trail. From there we toured much of Cornwall, both the north and south coasts, which is a terrific area for coastal scenery.

The Cornish people are very proud of their county, many dont even consider themselves English, They are Cornish.

    Great holiday destination !!!

    Smile

If you do get down and want a day out on the bikes AND some culture you could visit Lanhydrock at Bodmin. The National Trust have just spent  £3million developing cycle trails and a cycle hub with bike hire, cafe etc. There is a choice of trail grades and a skills section and you can also get to Cardinham Woods which has the Beast of Bodmin blue trail.

If you have the time you could aslo visit Lanhydrock House for your culture top up.

Thanks that's exactly the kind of thiing we are after!

Regards the weather and it being a gamble - we have loads of weekends away - we have about 10 outings a year - the weather is a gamble but on the days its nice I would rather be here than anywhere else!  We went to France the summer before last with the
caravan to Brittany and the weather was rubbish!  Therefore we are waiting til the children are a bit older and will holiday here in the meantime.  I also reall dislike flying.

Have you looked at Parkdean Holidays in the southwest? They offer sites with lots to do and a good choice of pitches. We have friends with children who used the Holywell Bay site in Cornwwall for a few years, the beach is a real bonus!
