Towball advice needed

I am completely new to caravanning and have bought a van fitted with a winterhoff hitch. When manouvering the van into my driveway, which took a while, there was alot of creaking type noises and I wondered if I should be greasing the towball. The guy we bought van from said we shouldnt? I am confused about this and many other things any advice would help.

 

I am intending in having the van serviced before I venture out into the unknown
