Puffins
Some of my fellow members may recall that last year, when the Puffins returned to Northumberland I posted the sad story of hundreds of them being washed up dead on the beaches. Basically, after getting back tired and hungry from their winter migration, they were hammered by rough North Sea storms and many of them lost their battle to survive.
As some folks know, we take our collies to the beach at Alnmouth every day - and last year it was awful seeing so many of these lovely birds dead and scattered all over the beach. It was so sad.
However, the good news is that this year - after the mildest winter I can remember for years, not one puffin - or any other seabird for that matter - has been found on the beach.
They've been greeted this year by a pleasant spring and much calmer waters and they seem to be doing well in their usual haunts eg on the Farne Islands.
Cheers
