Not too far from home
We should have been sharing a pitch with our grandsons on our favourite ( secret) campsite in France this week. However, all our summer plans were scrapped this year when Catherine took ill with a rare immune system disorder. Her treatment continues until November, but meantime we can’t stray far from home and the NHS!
Undismayed, we have been having short mid-week breaks in our motorhome at sites not far from home. We store our MH near Castle Donnington, and leave our car there when we set off. So far we’ve been to CC, C&CC and private sites at Wagtails, Kingsbury Water Park, Woodlands nr Ashbourne, Poolsbrook, Carsington Water, Greendale nr Oakham, and Clent Hills. We’ve enjoyed our visits to all these sites, and the weather has been pretty good.
There’s still some summer left and we want to continue our mini-holidays between tests and treatment. We’d welcome any suggestions for other sites not too far from home that we could visit. Catherine can’t cycle and can’t walk very far so we’re looking for sites with access to short walks ( not through fields and over styles) and some local interest. Our ‘van is a modest size and so we like to use site facilities for showering et cetera.
At Greendales, we managed the walk into Whissendine for a ‘Senior Citizens’ lunch at the White Lion.

Hello ChasandCath. Lovely photographs, I hope Cath continues to progress health wise.
Not sure how far you want to travel, but what about Clumber Park? The Club has a site there with all facilities, and once the children are back at school, it shouldn't be as busy, especially mid week. There are some easy, flattish walks, great scenery and
wildlife, a lovely gift shop and visitor centre, and the walled garden is very nice. This is all quite close to the Club Site. Sherwood Forest Visitor and Thoresby Hall are quite close if you wanted to venture out of Clumber Park itself.0 -
Chas, dont know the area very well so no recommendations, but just a line to wish Cath all the best in her continued recovery.
hope to catch you guys on the road again really soon...

Would agree about Teversal - we have been there a few times but its just a bit close to home for us. The walking is similar to Poolsbrook - a country park on an ex colliery site which has some inclines but the paths are well made up so generally easy walking.

We've continued with our short breaks, and have been to Springwood, 3.8 miles near Melbourne, just for two nights and Woodhall Spa for 4 nights, where we walked to the the town, and to the Petwood hotel for coffee on the terrace. We wanted to stay away over the weekend but all the CC and CCC sites in central England were fully booked, so we went to a small site at Tuxford and the finally to the CL at Crich. A steep walk down into the village, and then a peek over the fence at the Tramway museum.Next week, we're going to Chatsworth for 3 nights: we're told the walking's good there.

Have you tried Conkers CCC site? Easy walks in the "National Forest" . The Youth Hostel just outside the site does meals when booked in advance.
It's on our list of possibles. Thanks!
And thank you to everyone else for their suggestions and good wishes.

Glad you are getting out and about, hope things are going well. Chatsworth area is lovely. Haddon Hall is close by, much more interesting than Chatsworth. Take a look at Cromford as well, you can do a nice level walk along beautiful canal, and look around

We had a very pleasant three-night stay at Chatsworth on the sunniest pitch on the site
The weather was excellent and everyone we met seemed to be in good humour. Cath managed to walk to Chatsworth House.
Her personal best so far was a walk over the hill
to Edensor, where we had a cherry-bakewell ice-cream.
All very peaceful and tranquil
We hope to keep travelling in October but many of those sites still open seem to be booked up already!

Is Rutland Water too far? There's an AS site there and plenty of flat walks around the water itself with cafes and pubs.
Best of luck to both of you and "Carry on Camping" as they say.
The site mentioned above is called Rutland Caravan & Camping. As said it is an Affiliated site. It is in the small village of Greetham (2 pubs and a shop). Not far away if the beautiful estate village at Exton, nice for a walk around and coffee at the Fox
& Hounds. A little further on is Barnsdale Gardens made famous by gardener Geoff Hamilton and a little further on from that you are on Rutland water, the biggest man made reservoir in Europe. If you need something bigger then there is the towns of Oakham and
Stamford both really nice.I think I've talked myself into going now.

We spent 5 nights their on our last tour. They had just updated the toilet block. 15 min Stroll to Greetham via a security rear site exit using key card and a couple of plesant pubs. as well as an interesting little village.
Also (we did not use it but others did) Heated indoor swimming pool which is now open and can be enjoyed all year round.

We always go to Conkers with friends for the May Day Bank holiday weekend. Beware of the hardstandings - they must be the hardest hardstanding I have ever tried to peg into. Take spare rock pegs and a good lump hammer.
The place we go for a meal is 'The Cricketts' at Acres ford - usually a good meal.
A little further afield is Blackshaw Moor at LeeK. I quite like Blackshaw Moor.
Didn't realise you were so close to us Chasncath.
