Rowntree Park walk into York

After ages trying we have finally managed to get booked into Rowntree Park in York for a few days in April. I have read that you can walk into the city from this site is this true and if so how far a walk is it into the main attractions eg the Shambles and
minster etc Also can you catch the train to Whitby from here as ideally we would like to leave the motorhome on site.
