Car battery discharging

I would be interested in the thoughts of other members re the following occurence..

I drove my car, a Vauxhall Insignia, to my storage to facility intending to take the caravan out. While I was doing some bits and pieces in the caravan I had the mains unit switched on so I could listen to the radio via 12v.

I then hitched the van up to the car and coonected the electric cable. I went to start the engine to tow the caravan out but the car battery seemed almost flat and wouldn't start the engine. I disconnected the caravan but still it wouldn't start.

I called Green Flag but after about 20 minutes while I was waiting I thought I would give the car another try and it started. I left the engine running until the breakdown people arrived and they tested the charge from the battery which was satisfactory.

The mechanic thought that having the mains unit switched on in the caravan whilst it was connected to the car without the engine running for about 10 minutes might have been the problem.

Anyone any thoughts on this?
