It looks as if we have a poorly dog today.  Completely off food and is passing blood in stools.  We're quite worried about her at the moment but have booked Lizzie in for the vet this afternoon.  Frown

That sounds a bit worrying, David. Best to get the vet to check Lizzie out. Hope it turns out to be nothing too serious!

Aye, vet is best place for something like that DSB. Sometimes I think anal glands are usually at root of such problems ( if you will forgive the pun!) Hope things are quickly sorted for you.Happy

Carol took her to the vet this afternoon, while I was at my 6 monthly out-patients appointment at the hospital.  She seems to think it is gastroenteritis with perhaps some sort of infection.  We have medicine and antibiotics.  She has to be starved for 24 hours and the small amounts of food three times a day.  If she's no better by Monday or if she's any worse, we have to take her back.

    Fingers crossed for some improvement.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you David.

Lady goes back to the vets to have her stitches removed tomorrow ( though I'm not quite sure where the stitches are - we had her spayed last week!). She's been on lead walks only for the past 8 days and she's just desperate to be off and running again! Happy

Thanks for the comments folks - and hope all goes well with Lady, Moulsey.

You are right about animals being such a worry, Ruby.  They certainly are part of the family, but one of the biggest concerns is that they just can't tell us exactly what the matter is.

Lizzie seems a little brighter this evening.  She wants food, but that's a no-no at the moment.  No walkies either, according to the vet.

    Hi David,

Keep a very watchful eye on her because it can be very serious. My border collie Max had the same codition which unfortunately turned out to be an ulcer in his stomach which had penetrated the lining and i had no option but to put him to sleep aged 12 two
years ago.Tried everything for him even syringing syrup (from the vets) every 4 hours.

Hope all goes well but don't be afraid to take her back to the vets if you think she's no better.

Hope  you  and  Lizzie  are  happy  with  your  respective  results,  David.  I  don't  worry  much  about  my
visits  to  the  Quack,  but  if  I'm  taking  one  of  the  family's  animals  in,  It's  me  that  needs  the  tranquiliser  !!

Hi everyone.  Thank you for your posts.

She seems a lot better now.  We've put her back on normal 'dried' food, but are keeping her off the wet pouches, which she loves.  The problems have only been occurring since she's been having these.  We started giving her these after she really enjoyed the free samples - then we bought some, and them bought some more etc.

Fingers crossed it will settle down now.  She's still finishing her course of antibiotics at the moment.

Set back with Lizzie today.  Back to square one - same problem as last week.  Took her along to the vet again with stool sample (yuk! yuk!).  The vet has sent it off for testing together with bloods.  He has given her a couple of antibiotic injections and
some special canned food to eat - she must eat nothing else.  He suspects colitis or pancreatitis.  I guess the worst scenario is the big 'C', but we'll know more when the test results are through.

    It's a really worrying time.

Sorry to hear about yours Ruby.

    I'll keep you all posted.

Hope she is doing better now David. Bramble was like this before christmas and they thought he had pancreatitus but it cleared up with the low fat food and he's been ok since. I did go online and check the foods and realised that some were really poor quality
especially if made abroad. He's now on Natures Harvest (which has traceable meat) or home cooked vegetables and meat.

Hope she feels better soon x

Well, a few days on and she seems much better again.  The vet put her on I.D. canned food, which she seems to like.  We are now down to the last couple of cans, so after speaking with the vet, we have put her on a mixture of the canned and dried I.D.

The test results confirm pancreatitis, but everything else seems clear.   Hopefully it will clear up now, but I guess we will always have to keep an eye out for re-occurrence.  She likes the I.D. food so might keep her on it.

......also, her coat is really poor at the moment - abnormal moulting!  The vet said that when a dog is ill, her 'system' puts all the effort into 'supporting' the bit that's ill, and the first thing they shut down on is the skin and coat.  He is convinced that once the pancreatitis is under control, the coat will recover, but when she has had a couple of 'clear weeks' he will start to help her recover her coat.

Ah glad Lizzie is feeling much better and at least you now have confirmation of whats causing her illness and you can work on that.
