Melamine Cleaning

Having purchased a crockery set when we got our van last summer, we also bought "Royal Melamine Cleaner". Within the space of a week our teacups were the colour of a "sixty a day" man's teeth and the the aforesaid cleaner made absolutely no difference.
Using old fashioned bi-carb has improved it a bit. Is there anything out there that really does work?
