Tips for touring the Scottish Highlands

Hi. We are planning to take our caravan to Scotland for 2/3 weeks next year. We are aiming at the Highlands and will need an over-nighter en route to and from the Midlands. Tips please on suggested sites and itineraries, particularly north and west of Inverness.
Tips on timing also welcome - to avoid the dreaded midgies!
