We've also had the fridge go off in France (we were at a far corner of the site with a rather ancient looking supply point).
Our fridge doesn't change automatically and we put it on gas.....only to wake in the night to a strange smell.....switched it back to electric, which was now working.
We've since had the fridge serviced and a new burner fitted.
But I'm sure you are right, that an advertised 16 amp supply will probably be much reduced, especially in winter months on a busy site.
