How well are dogs accepted in Europe?

We are considering taking our dog to France and beyond and would like to know what sort of experience we are likely to have in terms of peoples attitude to dogs and what proportion and types of places will be able/unable to visit with our dog in tow.  As
well as France we are interested in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy. We woulds love to hear of others experiences, advice and any recommendations of where to go etc. Thank you
