new whip style aerial on motorhome

I wonder if anyone can tell me if the whip type tv aerial on my newly aquired motorhome are any good or is it better to have the external directional type fitted as we havent tried ours yet. Told by on site that they are not too good so someones advice
would be helpful to decide
