Travelling overnight to Godrevy Park

Hi all

We are travelling to Godrevy Park from Oxfordshire next weekend, planning to travel in the evening to avoid the worst of the traffic. I understand there is no late night arrivals area at Godrevy Park, can anyone suggest somewhere we can pull up, put the
steadies down and sleep? We would prefer to stop after the Bodmin road works and don't feel we can safely stop in one of the A30 lay-bys (will have a disabled teenager and dog with us).

Can anyone give us advice on where to stop? I've seen that there is a new service station at Bodmin, will this be full of trucks coming and going all night? Should we see if we can use late night arrivals on another sight?

Many thanks :)

Benson, you are right to get west of the Roadworks on the Bodmin Moor section of the A30 during quiet times. You are also right in saying there is a new service area. It's at Victoria just west of Bodmin. I haven't a clue what it's like at night as I'm at home tucked up in bed then. Godrevy Park is an hour or so from there.

You don't say if you have a MH or caravan which can make a difference to any advice given about stopping overnight. Personally, I wouldn't stop in lay-bys with either outfit..

The services were very busy yesterday at Victoria, in my own opinion I do not think they are suitable for overnight stops and I think they will be extremley busy in the next few days , they are not massive comoared to the motorway ones.

If you could get a late arrival site for a night that would be better for you if possible. The roads around St Austell have been quite busy already today.

It was also on the local news last night despite promises made when the roadworks started about lane openings in the summer it has not been practical to do so, there is only one lane for travelling into  Cornwall. , so there will be defnitley  hold ups ,
but there is two lanes open for traffic coming out of Cornwall.

Enjoy Godrevy its my favourite site.

Mine too, Canenriot, or one of them.

We travelled home down the A303, M5, A38 yesterday and the eastbound holiday traffic was much heavier than the westbound. I bet it's horrific westbound today.

Do you know if it's possible, or wise, to stop overnight at the old services at Victoria? It's only a very short detour off the A30 and there's plenty of parking at the service station and snack place.

I'd be inclined to leave at about 03.00 am and get down into Cornwall before it goes mad then have an hour or two in a layby somewhere near to the site whilst waiting for 12.00 to arrive but i'm a big fan of travelling at night and i realise not everyone
    is.

I could have suggested two good lie up spots had it not been for the roadworks, but both slap bang in the middle of the mayhem at the moment!

What about pulling off the A30 at the Fraddon Services? Couple of large car parks there, McDonalds and others, you might be ok? Further down, just before you head up towards Godrevy, there is a small shopping outlet (M&S, Boots I think) opposite McDonalds and Services at Hayle. Again you could make enquiries? Won't be overly quiet, but should be safe enough.

I don't know how big your outfit is, but if smallish, I think there is a car park just past Godrevy Site up on Towans as well. Might be a bit rough though, possibility of height barrier as well? I would ring Wardens at Godrevy and see if this is at all a possibility.

Edit: just taken a peek on Google Earth, there are a couple of car parks just past entrance to Godrevy Site, one looks quite large. Depends on your outfit, and of course if anyone else has the same idea! Good luck!

I'd forgotten about Fraddon, to be honest, TDA. MacD's, Premier Inn, TableTable etc and plenty of parking. Kingsley Village Retail Park.

I wouldn't recommend Hayle Retail Park as it's not a huge carpark and they have security patrols.

I was waiting to hear if the OP has a MH or cvan as I wouldn't fancy taking a cvan to either carpark on Gwithian Towans!

I suspect the best answer will be for the OP to search out a CL that allows late arrivals. He won't be the only one looking for somewhere to stop next weekend by any means and it's going to be chancy.

Yes I agree. Wasn't sure about Hayle Retail Park, but bet you are right about security Patrols. A30 sounds a nightmare at moment!Happy

We haven't used it this year at all but stuck to the A38. Our local news ran a piece last night on the Bodmin Moor section where the works are. As Canenriot said, despite promises, they've not been able to open a second westbound lane (due to the earlier
wet weather, apparently) but have opened two lanes eastbound. Chaos will reign.Sad

I would go for overnight, as suggested above, or maybe the next day-if you are thinking of a Saturday. We regularly stay at St Ives in August to be with visiting family and although we have to book Sat to Sat always travel on the Sunday to avoid the worst
    traffic.

Thanks for all the replies, will look at Fraddon. We have a six berth caravan so the small car park and the lay-bys after Godrevy won't be suitable.

Can't do an early morning start with our son, car to bed in the caravan is achievable, house to car isn't unfortunately. Also can't get the caravn out of storage at that time and there are now so may cars parked on our road we would never get it down there!

Neither car park at Gwithian (not Godrevy, that's several miles further on and the CC site name is misleading) won't be accessible with your cvan, Benson.

I wouldn't turn up at Kingsley Village on the off chance if I were you but ring and check.

I still think a suitable CL will be your best bet - one that permits late arrival.
