Run flat tyres.....not great for towing
I own a BMW X1 which I absolutely love as a tow car, and have been all over including laatvyear to the South of France and back. However last year we sadly had to get home urgently from France due to a family
illness.
As we neared Rouen the last thing I needed happened. We had just driven through some road works on a minor road where a thick layer of tar and stones had been freshly laid. Traffic lights took us off the new
part onto the other side. This meant I had to drive over the rough unfinished lip of new tar. I didn't think anything was amiss but -after about 2 miles suddenly the red warning light came on and I had a flat.
Fortunately we were on a quiet road and the Red pennant cavilry eventually arrived. So I now new how the tyres would fare.....not well. The run flat on the rear didn't last very long and certainly not the 50
+ miles claimed and on top I had to have both rear tyres replaced (French law). Of course because it was run flats.....no spare tyre ! We got going the next day aftern the most charming young French camp site owners helped us by running us into the town
twice- once to collect the car and once to get our dog seen by the vet. The slammer was the £100 excess I had to pay because the vehicle did not have a serviceable spare.
The garage did give me the rear tyre which as still OK and it now sits in my garage. But no space to put a spare in the car as the space which would otherwise have had a spare wheel now has the car battery.
i am thinking of getting a rim and fitting the spare wheel and taking it with me in a roof box.
But as far as the run flat was concerned....it's not much use when towing a caravan.
