Broken Rear Springs

I tow with a 2003 Mercedes ML270.  At MOT I was told I have two broken rear springs on the car - hence failure and £1000 bill.  Is it likely that towing a 1500Kg caravan with a nose weight of 89Kg ( both well within spec) has contributed to this failure
(garage says not), and if so any measures to take to prevent recurrence.
