Driving - top north east of Scotland

Has anyone driven on the Ullapool /Durness/Tongue/Thurso (A894/A838/A836) road? Looking at driving that route from a site we will be staying at Poolewe heading to the CC site at Thurso. Google gives the route an extra 1hr over the more direct route from
Poolewe via Dingwall/A9. but noticed some of the route is single track with passing places.  

Is it a busy route.

Is it as scenic as it may look!

Whats the A9 like (scenic / busy ?)
