Upgrading your BHP?

I drive a C-Max 1.8 zetec petrol. It tows my Elddis Typhoon GT ok, though uphill is not great.   Bhp is currently about 125.

Has anyone ever increased the bhp on their car, say by using performance air filter kits or engine chips?

Was there much improvement?
