Operating gas equipment whilst driving

Having just brought a new motorhome, I was shown round by the sales staff on collection during which I was quickly shown how to operate the buttons on the Truma CS regulator and pigtail HRP! The true purpose of this equipment was not explained properly.
 Having now researched this it now seems that it is accepted practice to operate liquid gas heaters whilst in transit.  Must admit I have never done this, does everybody with this equipment do this as standard practice?
