Second hand car: things to watch when buying?

Right! In two months I'm looking around for a second hand car to tow a caravan (around 15' internal) for the next six months. What sort of things must I check for?

Is the bloke selling the legal owner to do so? Is there still finance owing on the car? MoT? Tax? How do I go about checking the paperwork is kosher?

Mechanically, can I get the local AA to put it on the hoist for me to look at?
