Rubbish disposal

On a CL we stayed on recently when we arrived the single dustbin was full. At that point we were just us on the site and we took our rubbish with us when we went out and put it in the bin at Tesco but we noticed that when three other vans came they piled
their rubbish next to the bin, so we just did the same from then on.
Just curious - what would the ''acceptable procedure'' be?
