A Spring reminder about horses on the road
With spring now upon us and the caravanning season starting in earnest can I just remind you all that this is the time of year horse riders and drivers tend to be emerging more too – often after a winter break too.
A caravan is a potentially very scary thing for a horse and a horse when spooked can move sideways a long way in a very short space of time so please remember the Highway Code which states
‘’ Horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles. Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders
may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse or rider. Look out for horse riders’ and horse drivers’ signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard.’’
On a practical note remember too that whilst most riders have insurance it is not mandatory for horses, so you might find yourself paying out for repairs or claiming off your own insurance if there is an incident.
Thank you everyone
