Honda crv 1.6 D

I am considering buying a Honda crv with the new 1.6 diesel engine, however I am a bit concerned that this is a bit small for towing. On paper it is more powerful than their old 2l diesel ( 158hp ) and has the same torque – so it should be fine – it’s
just the psychology of towing with less than 2l !! Does anyone have experience of towing with the crv 1.6 d?

We have a light van – Sprite Alpine 4 and currently use a c-max 2l d, which is an excellent tow car – would just like something with 4wd.

    Hi

Sorry for late reply. Not been on site recently.

We have the CRV with the 1.6. Went for the auto. So far towed 4 times with it. We have aLunar Ultima 470 which runs at around 1265kg (upgraded mtplm to 1350). Tows well, much better than expected. It has returned between 32 to 34 mpg towing. solo it is doing
around 42 combined (includes towing stints). Only real issue is towing electrics. Make sure you get dedicated kit and if you can afford it, the Honda one for the supplementary charging kit. Towing Centre kits use voltage contolled relays and with the smart
charging system on the CRV they don't  work. Honda use an ignition controlled relay to overcome this. With the voltage controlled relay you can overcome the charging of the van battery and running the fridge by driving with the lights on. Just fool the car
    system.

Overall very pleased so far. Engine smooth and had plenty of power. Cruises well on motorway. Read somewhere that someone had suffered with going up hills towing, we haven't and thought we would with the auto. Turn off stop/start and econ mode when towing.

    Hope this helps

    Peter
