Storm strap on a porch awning?

We have a lightweight porch awning - the ones with the bendy poles.  Next outing is a site on the top of the hill looking out over the sea so it can get blowy.  We have a storm strap but have never used it - if using it on a lightweight porch would you just
put it over the top and anchor it down?
