Black exhaust marks on side of motorhome

Having made a 200 miile trip last week, I noticed a significant area of 'black soot' on the bottom edge of the van when I parked up.  On inspection, I found the exhaust pipe doesn't clear the underside of the motorhome, nor does it finish level to the outside
either.  I hadn't given it a second thought until that moment, and now wonder if this is 'normal' for a motorhome, or could I have short section of exhaust missing? (Mot'd in Sept) (2001 Diesel Elddis Sunseeker 35)
