Thetford toilet overshooting rhe flush water

When you flush the toilet the water sometimes jets straight over the flat bit near the seat hinge and then runs down the back of the toilet soaking the floor.  We have done a temporary fix with a blue tack surge barrier but any ideas on how to do a more
permenant fix would be great.
