'Alan Rogers' Camping Cheques

In all the years we have used these abroad (& ACSI), we have NEVER had to book. We have turned up on site in Italy/France/Spain/germany and just presented our card ( the only exception being Gandspette where we always book just in case). The directory clearly
states 'no need to book' out of season. Why then, when e mailing several UK sites that accept camping Cheque to see if the same rule applies,  have I been told that I have to book? Out of 'season'? Am I unreasonable? Is it quaint old UK?
