A bit fit

i got a fitbit for Christmas. Since then I've done the recommended 10,000 steps each day. Today I was a bit short so i've just been for a walk to catch up. It's really cold outside now and common sense should have kept me in the warm. I think these devices
cause obsessive behaviours!

Very obsessive, I've had mine for a year now and it's become a matter of honour to achieve my target

running up and down stairs a few times adds a bit

Try lending it to someone else who's more active. SurprisedInnocent

I think on the exercise/fitness front we can all gain in different ways without trying too kill ourselves.I,ve never subscribed to this "no pain no gain" theory. Our age and physical state has too be a factor in whatever we do.

I installed an app on my phone early last year. It's averaged out at 6000 a day. It is higher when I spend less time on here!

Go into town shopping, use car park on the outskirts, we walk further and also pay less parking charges

Walked from Warwick to Shrewley along the  grand union canal and back via the road around 20000 steps today. Lunch ( at the Durham Ox and a couple of pints) probably undid all the effort.

Walked 25000 steps today, 12500 to the pub for a 3 course lunch and 12500 back, this step counter thing doesn;t work, I didn't loose any weight or feel fitter, what a waste of money that was.

Maybe you don't loose weight or feel fitter but you dont feel so guilty when you've walked to get your lunch - you must have done about 6 miles

Since christmas i have drunk less beer and had smaller portions for meals. Also no snacking between meals. To date i have lost 16lbs so there,s no need too starve yourself to get a result.

Wow V9 that is really impressive.  Sadly my own record is just the opposite.  I have cut out booze on weekday evenings, cut down on portion size and also cut out snacking ( Although that was not really a problem)  But I simply cannot lose anything although
do need to shed 4 stone if possible.

I think I am in a catch 22 situation. My back is very bad indeed so cannot actually take much exercise. I used to love walking but back will not allow.  So lack of exercise means that despite dieting I am not losing weight!

Just completed a whole week of achieving over my daily step target (177% ion one day). Do I feel fitter? Not really, just ready for a sit in the evening

We have an interesting situation developing in our parish and I am genuinely interested in what others think.

A couple of years ago the Parish played host to an organisation that encouraged a fitness habit that involved running around one of our larger parks. A great idea we thought to encourage fitness!

The idea caught on, and more and more people have joined in to the extent that we now have upwards of 300 people every week, pounding around our perimiter paths.

300 pairs of running feet do over a period of time cause quite a lot of damage to the surface. That damage of course has a cost element to the now more frequent repairs.  But the organisers refuse point blank to request any payment for participation or to pay the parish for the repairs.

Now that actually gives us a problem!  The parish Council gets its income from local rates. So I suppose we could just increase the rates a bit to cover the maintenance. BUT most of the runners are not local residents so why should they pay?

The run organisers are very well connected and have mounted a bit of a nasty campain in local media about the Cruel Parish who want to stop them from running, so the temptation is just to give in. But now other users, football clubs, the Cricket club and other users of the parish hall are now saying, "Well if they are getting it for nothing why should we pay?"

Its a mess!  Anyone else had this?

Ridiculous! 300 pairs of feet shouldn't have any effect on a decent pathway surface.

or do the runners use the parish hall?

We are talking 300 pairs of (running- Pounding) feet here. and I can assure you they are causing damage.  Remember I am not talking about a properly tarmac'd path, Just one established for amblers to wander around during a leisured walk. (Crushed & compressed hardcore) Remember too that I am talking about every week, - Not just once every now & again!

Dont get me wrong,  I can see the real value of fitness here. But the question is, - should local houseowners have to foot the bill for others from outside the area who are using the paths for their running?  And what should be our response be to our other users who also now want their useage free?

I am actually one of the parish councillors that want them to stay. But its not that simple. A lot of local residents do object that they might have to foot the bill, but the runners refuse point blank to even consider paying a small levy.

and the trouble with a large group of runners is that they expect everyone else in the the park/area walking their dogs etc to get out of the way & let them through. There's a large group of runner that use our local park at the week end & there's a lot
of ignorant, arrogant barstewards that deem they have right of way Sealed

Tigerfish, how about fencing off different bits periodically with a sign to say it's to allow the damaged surface time to recover - this is regularly done in our local park and seems to work (although it's for where parked cars have been not running feet)

Thanks  SteveL but that does not resolve the main problem. If we go on letting them all run en mass for nothing. What do we then say to all the other users, dance groups, footballers, cricketers, model aircraft club etc etc who now say, well if they are
getting it for nothing, why do we have to pay?

Might make those using the area see the damage they're causing and reconsider contributing towards its upkeep

My fit bit is driving me nuts. It's become a matter of honour to make the little bar chart go orange at the end of the day when I download activity info to show I've reached, or exceeded, target. I wouldn't mind if I felt fitter but I don't ??
