Reverse Polarity in Europe

Pardon me if I am a bit dense but what is the problem with reverse polarity in a hookup in Europe?  I travelled in France this year and some of the sites showed as reverse polarity on my Power Supply Unit with
no apparent adverse effects.  Lots of articles warn of reverse polarity but none appear to describe what the problem might be.

Could  anyone enlighten me please?
