Confused about awnings

Hello all.

Our motorhome has one of those awnings thats attached to the side of the van. More like an extra roof really. I'm looking for an awning that I think are called drive-away awnings but I'm confused about which type to get. Are they actually attached to the
van? If they are how would one know which one to get ? Or are they free standing and you just get them as near to the van as possible when pitching it?
