Where to park? Where to Rest

I personally prefer to drive until I feel I have had enough which depends on me, traffic and other factors, rather than stop every couple of hours though I immediately stop if I feel I have had enough.
On French autoroutes there are regular "aires" for this purpose, and even on many main roads. In the UK I see regular signs telling me to rest but nowhere to do it!
Whereas most aires in France are nicely laid out, UK motorway service areas are crowded noisy nightmares.
I don't think heading for a site every few hours is an option, I am grateful that 5 or 6 hours non stop driving does not trouble me.
