BMW 520d as a tow car

Hi 

Anyone drive the latest BMW520d as their towcar? Would appreciate an honest view of it's capability. I have a Merc ML320 4x4 and wonder if I will miss it's offroad ability i.e. the muddy field syndrone! The fuel consumption is crippling at 15mpg towing!
