Hello fellow caravaners. We purchased our first caravan together yesterday 3rd June 2019, Alan being a seasoned caravaner and me, Josie a complete novice. I am extremely excited to take our first away trip, we are based in Staffordshire so we would welcome tips for great places further North to visit. We have been away in the Southern parts of the land so want to see what UK can offer us up north.

Thank you fellow friends for any help you can offer

kindest regards

Alan and Josie x

"Further north" is a big area Josie,  but if you can narrow it down a bit you'll no doubt get loads of recommendations. Also, are you looking for "proper" club sites or smaller ones such as CLs many of which now have facilities every bit as good as club and commercial sites.

Anyway, exciting times lie in store! smile

If it's  a CL you're looking for I can recommend Goatfell Farm between Leek and Ashbourne. Easy access, very friendly owners and great views from the site. Lots of walks nearby, though none directly from the site.

If it's a club site you could try Buxton or even Chatsworth, not the smartest or most relaxed of club sites but with the great advantage of direct access to the grounds around the house.

For something completely different, just north of the Peak District, near Sheffield there is a CL at Wortley Hall - have a look at its website and reviews.

    Hope that helps. smile

Uttoxeter Racecourse site might make a good first stop to try everything out.

This is a super CL near the JCB factory, where you can book tours with or without breakfast:

Welcome A&J, living in Staffs you could of course head west into wales, not too far and stunning scenery.  Although we have several distant trips each year we also have several local trips (about an hour from home) as we van all year round

Hi Alan & Jo (or would a simple 'Hey up duck' suffice?!)

If you're heading into the Peak District then the Club has excellent sites at Buxton, Chatsworth and my favourite Carsington, amongst others

Heading north from there and into Lancashire I would recommend the Trough and Forest of Bowland before you reach Cumbria and the Lakes.....if you turn right you've Yorkshire to discover!

That should keep you busy for a while - enjoy your travels 👍😀

Agree with KS's recommendation for Field head Farm terrific CL (no shower though if that's  a consideration) and following the Trough of Bowland suggestion,  one of our all time favourite CLs is Drake House Farm high up in the hills just north of Clitheroe.

So you're not short of recommendations now, Josie - just fitting them all in will be the problem! smile

The nearest club site to Manchester is Burrs Country Park at Bury.  Bury is on the Metro link direct to Manchester although you would have a walk, or a short bus ride into Bury.  The East Lancs railway runs at the side of the site with vintage steam and diesel trains to Bury or Ramsbottom and the site has its own little station.

Out of the gate and you are in the country park complete with riverside walks, industrial heritage and a couple of small fishing ponds.  Not only that but the Brown Cow pub is just outside the gate.

This is our ‘go-to’ site when we fancy a short break and is ideal for us because it’s great for dogs and owners.

We recently used the Firs. A very nice small site pretty central for everything in the area, good wardens and cheaper than most. Would recommend this, although we have used Chatsworth (difficult to book though), Buxton, Leek and Carsington Water and have no complaints about them either. Carsington Water though is heavily wooded which might not suit everyone.

If you use the Firs though, follow the book directions as some of the alternative routes are none too good.

There is plenty to do in the area for most people so do some research to see what appeals to you.

Staying fairly local for first trip out is good advice with a new caravan, but one of you is used to vanning, so no doubt you will be fine.

As far as ‘up North’ goes, we are very fond of Northumberland. Still relatively undiscovered by the crowds, but has scenery, beaches and lots of things to do. There are a couple of decent Club Sites Berwick Seaview and River Breamish if a Site with facilities is your choice, but take a look at some of the CLs as well, lots to choose from, and a good bit cheaper.

Hope you both have a lovely time😁

I'm hoping Alan & Josie are enjoying a weekend away in the caravan right now! It'd be disappointing if they didn't let us know which, if any, of our recommendations they might try out. smile

Can’t agree with TTDA enough. Northumberland is gorgeous. From castles to islands, from beaches to forests, We stayed near to Seahouses on a CL. It’s a great central point for visiting places like the Farne  Islands, Holy Island, Anwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle. Beaches almost empty. When you’ve done all that- buy Fish and chips at Seahouses! Some of the best we have ever had! Great times ahead!

Was that Fowberry Farm Merve? We stayed there many years ago. Don’t think it is on CL network now though, gone private. Two more nice Northumberland stops are Brock Mill Farm, (CL) right by causeway to Lindisfarne, and a new favourite stop for us, West Kyloe Farm, which is private.

Alan & Josie - just thought to come back to this thread and I have to say that it's a bit disappointing that having asked for some help and having had lots of suggestions you haven't come back to let us know if any of the advice was helpful. frown
